"getting rid of anything that isn't in your color palette..." may seem a bit extreme, what if the item fits great and you love it, plus it could be overwhelming to do an extreme purge -- try rebuilding with a capsule wardrobe to start, check out this article in the MSP archives on this website.
For me, as a summer, black is not in my color palette and there are occasions that require black --a few days ago I attended a funeral, everyone wore black as culturally this was a sign of respect -- had I purged my wardrobe as suggested by wonderer, I'd have been in a jam and scrambling for an appropriate item at the last minute would have too much -- I've found a few accent pieces such as statement necklaces or scarves in my color palette along with the correct makeup for my age and skin tone -- as an example, MSP does not recommend red lips for my summer pallet but I love red lips for dressy occasions or just running errands, and this helps when I need to where a color that is not in my pallet. I wore black to the funeral and red lips, I received several compliments and felt appropriately dressed despite my color pallet... best wishes on the start of your journey and above all have fun, a smile is still the best accessory ... ;-)
