Dear SYSters,  With every new season MissusSmartyPants gets an inbox full of style dilemmas. With so many MSP SYSters asking for help; it's hard to answer each one individually. Questions range from: how to wear tights with fall skirts and dresses, how to choose the right color of tights based on shoes, plus questions about the right length for jackets and coats... plus so much more! Of course, MSP is always happy to help a SYSter out. After a brief discussion, we at MissusSmartyPants decided the smartest thing would be to answer ALL of these questions at one time.   Dress chic!   Pair blue and black together! By pairing colors together that are not traditionally ones that you think “go together” you’ll find you are tapping into new chic way of dressing. Use these guidelines below to help you (also use these suggestions for pairing brown and black together, bright pink with red, charcoal gray and tan).   Here's 4 tips for creating chic color combinations successfully...   1. Keep the colors deep. Pair rich black and dark blue together. Faded items don’t work as well.   2. One item should have texture. Texture adds depth (and interest). For example, black pants look fabulous with an iridescent ink-blue top. You can also look for woven fabrics, perhaps suede, or even a colorful sc[ More |  Email |  Print ]

This week, we're talking about denim! I love blue jeans, don't you? As the weather cools, we start wearing our denims or blue jeans more frequently. Soon they become one of our "go-to" fall staples. Gravitating towards comfort and warmth often means wearing our jeans <<grin>> A fall uniform. A typical fall/winter outfit usually consists of one of our favorite jeans matched-up with a knit top, or fuzzy sweater, or even a long tunic, fitted jacket or cardigan-plus a colorful scarf added for good measure. A cool weather "uniform" is good to have in our back pocket (pun intended) but the real key is to not let our outfits become boring. We need to mix up our style to keep our jean outfits fresh.   It's fall, y'all. It's scarf season! One of the best accessories (especially in cooler months) are scarves. Having said that, after awhile wearing scarves the same way over and over gets rather dull. How else how can you wear your scarf? What unique ways can you tie your scarves so that you create fun and interest to what you're wearing? I'll continue to share how I wear scarves throughout this fall season. However, Nordstrom did a fabulous job of showing how to tie a scarf: 4 scarves, 16 ways! Here is the link a short 3 minute video that will surely liven up your fall wardrobe.   October's air is cool and crisp. It's ideal weather for heading outdoors and enjoying the vibrant fall colors. Take advantage of your local farmer's market or pumpkin patch before the weather turns really cold. If you need some warmth, a jacket or coat, or a couple of light layers will do. However, soon you'll need a real winter coat or jacket. This is the best month to procure a new coat or jacket. The selection of coats is at its peak. Choose from top-quality jackets and winter coats...while the prices are just starting to drop! Searching now means you'll get a good price on a quality basic you'll wear for seasons to come.   Closet decluttering can be a life long struggle. It was for me...until I started dressing using capsule wardrobes. Prior to capsule wardrobes, I’d go through my clothes each season, rearrange my closet, remove a few things, and then add in even more. I felt I needed to welcome a season by going shopping for more clothes. Do you see the vicious cycle I had going on? Finally last year, I decided to clean out my closet for good; and when I did, a lot of questions and suppressed emotions came bubbling up: Guilt: “Why did I spend so much on things I ended up not wearing?”  Irritation: “Am I going to have to do this all over again in 6 months?” Panic: “If I let it go, will I miss it, and I might not [ More |  Email |  Print ]

As a woman with aging skin, the topic of skincare is near and dear to my heart. Since I'm nearly 60 (wow, did I just write that?!) I'm doing my best to care for my skin. I wash it with a gentle cleanser every morning and each night, plus I wear a moisturizer daily that has sunscreen in it. But, am I really doing everything I should? Is there more to skincare? With a plethora of products on store selves, at makeup counters and online, there are so many options; just how are we to know the products we need? Or for that matter, the products we don't need? Good skin makes us look more youthful. That means caring for our skin is hugely important. Looking possibly years younger than our chronological age only happens with good skincare.   [ More |  Email |  Print ]

Dear MSP SYSters,  I'm not French, but after visiting France, Paris in particular, I was enticed by the Parisian's simple-chic way of dressing. In fact, I really admire it. I made a lot of mental notes of the street fashions and the way the Parisian women dressed. I dissected each outfit...piece by piece. After a week, I was anxious to rush back home and replicate a few of these chic outfits. But, there's more to their style than just a few fab looks to copy. The way they dress goes deeper-it's a lifestyle and certain healthy attitude about a woman's clothing and body.   This week: The Definitve Guide to Shorts and Crops This is the warm season guide you'll use all season long!   SYSters want to know.  What to wear when it gets real warm out. As women we have lots options; like wearing a sundress or skirt, but more than likely when it's really warm, we will start wearing shorts and cropped pants.  Admittedly, I'm a little apprehensive about showing more skin as the weather warms. I know most women are. However, wearing the most flattering shorts and crops for our body type will make us look and feel our best. This week, it is my pleasure to share with you (this Thursday in your Personal Profile) "The Definitive Guide to Shorts and Crops".   [ More |  Email |  Print ]

Wear color saturation correctly    Since you may have found yourself with some time on your hands...Why not figure out how to use color saturation!   The colors you wear together should be similar in intensity so that your look is cohesive. In other words, pastels go together and jewel tones should be worn together. It is best not to mix saturation because more often that not, it won’t look quite right.   Try these pleasing color combinations:  soft pink and mint green soft pink and heather gray mustard yellow and amethyst stone white (or tan) and pure white   Deep color combinations: fuchsia and navy  navy and kelly green   Agai[ More |  Email |  Print ]

Oh my! How things have changed in just over a week. We are living right now in an unsettling place and time. Part of me wants to comply and do the right thing (staying home, social distancing) which I am doing-the other half wants to get out there and take on the world. While we are adapting (or doing our best to adapt) to a new way of living, it seems like a good time to access our current wardrobe and personal image. Let's look in our closets this week and see if we can check all the boxes on my top 14 ways to look fab. This week, 14 ways to look fab-even in these challenging times. These are ways to feel good even though your life and routines are being challenged right now. Of course, when things get back to normal, you'll use these tips again.   Join me. Dear SYSters,  To say the recent events have been stressful is an understatement. I honestly forgot to send out my "what's happening at MSP" weekly email. My life, and schedule have been turned upside down; nothing feels settled right now. I'm sure you can relate. These are unsettling times. As of lately, information keeps changing (it seems to change not just daily, but often hourly). We have been called to come together as one for the sake of humanity. We must distance ourselves from one another, stop our regularly lives, and take to temporary hibernation. This is how we will defeat the Coronavirus. We can do this. Thank goodness we have the internet to connect us all.   Soooo, continuing on with the regular scheduled topic is a good diversion from [ More |  Email |  Print ]

THIS WEEK'S ARTICLE: Update Your Hairstyle Dear SYSters,   This morning as I poured my coffee, and I managed to spill some coffee on my tan slacks (I attempted to wash the stain out, but it was noticeable all day). In the afternoon I opened the mailbox to an unexpected bill, plus I had an extra deadline to meet. There were lots of stressors today—but I handled all of them without freaking out! What was it that made me so resilient? I was having a “good hair day”!   Knowing my hair was styled just right made me feel like I was wearing a suit of armor. I was having a “good hair day” and nothing could penetrate my good mood. Having great looking hair is like wearing clothes that flatter your body type--it’s some[ More |  Email |  Print ]

It's week two of MSP's "Big Spring Preview"... The fun and fashion trends continue!  This week, you get parts one and two (the complete list) of what-to-have this spring, and how to wear it. Get ready for spring-now. This crazy up and down weather is so typical for early March. These fluctuations in temperature prompts us to prepare our closet for the change of season.  Editing my closet is on the top of my list this week. I'm rotating heavy winter jackets to the back of my closet, and moving lighter-weight blazers and "spring-like" sweaters towards the front. Even if I still have to wear several layers at one time, wearing lighter (and brighter) clothing is the best option for this in-between time. Is your closet ready for s[ More |  Email |  Print ]

Excuse me, for jumping on my soapbox for a moment. I have to say, it really upsets me that fashion magazines are more about selling ad space and copies than they are about actually helping women! These shiny magazines aren't cheap either. You spend good money, then end up with a bunch of ads for things you can't even afford--and that's just crazy. What a H-U-G-E disappointment. You were lured into buying this magazine by the promise of an article that looked like it would help your style or suggest something new and fun--but instead you got nothing.    Instead of sales pitches and/or product placements of clothing and makeup you can't afford (like $400 dress slacks or $200 face lotion-what a joke) ...Use[ More |  Email |  Print ]

Dear MSP SYSters, Nothing annoys me more than being told I can not wear something simply because of my age. Really? Just exactly who decided certain items of clothing should no longer be worn by woman who's over a certain age? Is thirty, forty, or fifty-or beyond, that's too old? Of course we need to assess our own bodies and decide what's best covered up and not exposed. But, what we wear should be of a more personal choice-not necessarily an "age" related thing. By using a full-length mirror and reviewing our backsides, most women can come to an intelligent decision whether they should be wearing something, or not. A good rule of thumb is; if you have doubts, then you should not wear it. Listen to your gut. As a stylist who has helped [ More |  Email |  Print ]

This week at MSP, we explore creative ways to mix more color into your wardrobe!  Instead of relying on your main color choice, (probably way too much BLACK) let MissusSmartyPants introduce (and inspire) new ways to add more color into your core wardrobe.  No more boring combinations of “black + another color”. Get excited about mixing fresh colors combinations like: lavender with peachy pink, a rose pink with soft brown, soft fuchsia, deep periwinkle, turquoise, and daffodil yellow with other colors—all pretty colors, found in nature!   Some things in life are taxes and getting older. Another thing that happens, as we age, we tend to gain a little "extra" flesh around our middle! Between dealing with an over-scheduled life, and natural shifts in our hormones; before we know it...we end up with a fuller waistline.  What's a SYSter to do? What is the best way to dress when your waistline has become somewhat undefined? Should you continue to squeeze into what you've always worn, or hide under something loose and baggy? The correct answer is NEITHER of these. Both are poor options for women with undefined waists. Both (squeezing into tight clothes or wearing baggy ones) will make you look bigger than you really are!   The right styles ca[ More |  Email |  Print ]
