Just a few weeks ago, we were impatiently awaiting nicer weather; and now suddenly, it's hot outside, really, really hot!  Dressing in hot, sticky weather is a real challenge. And now you wonder what could you possibly wear without becoming a dripping-sweaty mess?! This week’s style article is for you: "Style For Hot Summer Days". It's full of outfit suggestions for those hot and humid summer days! (Because obviously you've got to wear something LOL!) The key is to wear LESS but in a stylish way.   Summer brings us sales and we'd be silly not to take advantage of a few deep discounts on basics we can wear now (and into the fall season). However, our main objective in late June, July and August is to figure out how to dress stylish[ More |  Email |  Print ]

Closet clutter. It's an emotional statement to say the least. But what is it that makes us hold on to clothes we are not wearing? Why keep it when we only wear 20% of our closet? Exactly what is that 80% in our closet not being worn? For example, if you no longer have this item, then you will suffer terrible consequences later.  That’s where we get, “Oh, I’ll use it someday” or “What if I need it someday and then I don’t have it”.   This week, we examine the "how and why" we accumulate closet clutter. Once we understand its origins, we can work to remedy the situation. Most of the clutter comes from an emotional base. However, really understanding our human needs vs. wants can help us find some clarity. One of the biggest areas[ More |  Email |  Print ]

One of the most common reasons a woman looks bad in her clothes is because her clothing is off-balance.  I'm talking about understanding clothing proportions. You look bad when your clothing proportions are out of sync your own body's proportions. Keep in mind, body proportions are not necessarily height or weight issues. You can be large of stature or short and perfectly proportioned, or you can be tall and slim and totally off balance. This article is a must! Don't miss out. This week's article is: Proportions 101. It's something every woman needs to know about. Dressing for your body type helps "balance" your shape, there is no doubt about that. However, adjusting more specific "figure flaws" helps you look your best.   Nothing annoys me more than being told I can't wear something because of my age. Really? Just exactly who decided certain articles of clothing should no longer be worn by a woman over a certain age? And, what is that magical age? Thirty, forty, or perhaps fifty is too old? Of course we need to assess our own bodies and decide what's best covered up and not exposed. But, what we wear should be of a more personal choice-not necessarily an "age" related thing. By using a full-length mirror and reviewing our backsides as well our complete look, most women can come to an intelligent decision whether they should be wearing something, or not. A good rule of thumb is; if you have doubts, then you should not wear it. Listen to your gut. As a stylist who has h[ More |  Email |  Print ]

Then in the next week, put back the outfits you wear for that week to the other side. Notice how you grab (often) the same things over and over. Why does this happen? That's important, and worthy of spending time to find the right support for your body since you'll be wearing it for up to 18 hours a day.   1. Some sizes are interchangeable. Just like with clothing, you will find when trying on bras, a size 34D in one brand and a 36C in another fit the same-what's up with that?!   The temperature is dropping and there is a chill in the air. It's time to bundle up in style. Add a warm (and stylish) winter coat or jacket to keep the cold winter chill away.    Here in the south, the need for a heavy winter coat only lasts for a few months. However, in northern climates, the need for a winter coat may include several ultra-warm ones that will be worn into the early spring. What winter coat (or cold-weather jacket) will you be wearing? Will it be last year’s, or do you need a new one? If it is last year’s coat...is this coat flattering for your body type?   What are your numbers? Use your measurements to balance shape.    Do clothes often pull, are not long enough, or on the other hand, too long? Do you sometimes feel clothes just never fit you right? Guess what, most of these problems can be resolved if you know more about your body's proportions.      Measure yourself: __Top of head to underarms ___ __Underarm to break of the leg (where your upper leg bends) ___ __Break of leg to the knee ___ __Knee to floor ___ By knowing where on your body you are long or short can help you adjust your clothing lengths to balance your shape.  For example, you can change how long your legs appear by changing the length of your jacket...of course how much you change[ More |  Email |  Print ]

I am always talking about the need for more versatility. Without a doubt, a basic yet versatile wardrobe is essential to being a stylish woman. Wardrobe building without a plan means you'll have a lot of clothes, but nothing really goes together. This is sad and unnecessary. With a flexible, yet resourceful core wardrobe.... you purchase less clothes; yet you are able to create more outfits...this in turn makes you more stylish! See how this works? Repeat this mantra: Do not purchase something unless "You can wear it at least three different ways". I know I say this often, and perhaps you hear my voice (in your head) saying this while you shop, LOL! As a stylist, I know "one item, three ways" is the only way to shop be[ More |  Email |  Print ]

Makeup and the Older Woman   Dear MSP SYSters,    A couple of years ago I visited a department store makeup counter. The visit was long over-due. I'll be the first to admit it: my makeup needed some serious updating!    This was a “Wakeup for my makeup”!   I needed an update. I knew for a long time my makeup choices and application techniques were not all they could be. I told myself, "This is something you've got to do for yourself, girl". Then suddenly, one thing led to another and I made it happen. I couldn't be more delighted, because now I know how to apply eye shadow properly, and I found out where my blush should be placed (who knew?)...even my husband said, "Oh wow! You have eye lashes; I never kne[ More |  Email |  Print ]

With warm autumn colors filling the racks and shelves at your local stores (and online), it’s tempting to go on a shopping spree and buy all the latest trends. But instead, I suggest you search your closet for 5 essentials before rushing to buy anything. At least start with these 5 essential...before you shop for fall.
