Another week, another fresh start. Last week nothing went quite right, so this week, I'm excited to start off on a fresh note. I'm feeling positive, upbeat, and looking forward to a fabulous week. How about you? We all have "one of those weeks" where nothing goes quite right. Between my busy (overbooked) schedule, plus several looming deadlines...last week left me short on time and frazzled. I was eager to get into the stores for some "research" and "me" time (aka: retail therapy). It never happened and I continued to feel stressed. This week is going to be different.  This week will be different. I've got an open schedule (I'll be able to look in the stores at the latest styles), I'm sharing my favorite topic (instant slimming tips) and I've[ More |  Email |  Print ]

Exercise in Style It's a new year-a fresh start. Yes, it sure can be. However, cynics often argue that these motivational messages of "getting healthy and fit" this time of year are nothing more than sales pitches. Well, they do have a point; you can get a fresh start on Febuary 2, or March 5th, for that matter. A fresh start can happen any time of year. However, what happens in January is, people collectively are wanting change, and have a desire to make things better than they were last year; this often includes becoming healthier. MSP's Style Resolutions   It's a New Year and it's my 13th year of blogging!    I didn't quite write this out in time to make January 1st ...but here are my 6 style resolutions:     1. Wear more color. I've certainly got lots of basics in black. This year I'm hoping to add more color by adding/replacing quite a few of my basics in COLORS.      2. Wear unusual color combinations.  I just did this yesterday and if I do say so myself, it came off fabulously!!! Yesterday I wore a dark gray long-sleeved v-neck tee, a deep raspberry fly-away cardigan and a burnt amber necklace w/ my dark-washed jeans and boots! I[ More |  Email |  Print ]

It's January 2018. All of the festivities are behind us now. The ornaments are packed away, or soon will be, until next year. Our living rooms get reset back to their normal arrangements, and our lives beg us to hit the "reset button". A new year always brings us opportunities for fresh starts and new beginnings. Part of starting over is reviewing what we can do better, how we can improve in areas we have failed in the past. Of course, eating healthier and moving more are always on the top of our lists. However, in order to really move our year forward on a positive note-I suggest an organized wardrobe! Wondering what your wardrobe really should have?   It's the end of the year...the best time to take an assessment of where your life is thus far. How are you doing style-wise?   Examine your life thus far. Right now, take this moment and think about life and the meaning of it. What does it mean to live a good life? Are you succeeding? Do you have things you still wish to do? Do you have regrets? This last week, as I've been deeply pondering this topic and wondering how to present it, something amazing happened. While browsing the internet looking at the latest fashions, this video somehow presented itself  to me. The Good Life Project. It caught my eye immediately.   We hate to admit it, but looks do matter. Our clothes aren't just something we wear; they help us make a good first impression-or not. Our clothing choice is what people see and part of what makes us unique. This is not to say you must have lots of money, or wear fancy clothes in order to make a good impression. Quite the contrary; it's more about appearing well put-together and neat and clean that matters most. Are you making a good first impression? Every woman should do her best to look her best. Of course we all have days that this is easier said than done. But, stop and think about it: when we look good; we feel good. What wear wear matters.   Sounds like an info-mercial...but this "instant style tip" will make you look slimmer (yes, instantly)! Simply "up-size" your handbag. Instead of cramming everything into that way too small handbag...ditch it for something BIGGER! Bigger is better because you will look slimmer. It's a proportional thing. When you carry around a small bag, it makes you look rather large. A bigger tote is the way to go! The proof is in the mirror. Stand in front of a full-length mirror at the store with your (way too small) handbag over your shoulder. Notice how your shape appears larger. Now, go try on a LARGE handbag over your shoulder. You got it...YOU are instantly slimmer! Go forth and enjoy the holidays. Blessings to you and your loved ones this time of year. Leslie ak[ More |  Email |  Print ]

Great style is an attainable thing. However, I know plenty of women who would strongly disagree. Their reasoning might be that some women don't have the ability to put together anything stylish because they were never taught HOW. They also might further suggest that some women weren't born with a "fashion gene" and therefore just can't look stylish-no matter what. I firmly...disagree.   Take advantage of dressing with your Color Season in mind so your style can reach its pinnacle. Why is color such a big deal when planning your wardrobe? Layers add lift and bounce (something you lose as you age).   Go lighter. Lighter makeup application is better. Wear a smokey eye-but with lighter neutral colors. Avoid deep red lips.   Get your sleep. You need your 7-8 hours a night. Sleep resets your body, de-stresses and restores you, in mind, body, and spirit.   Exercise. I love my blue jeans, don't you? As the weather cools, we begin to pull out our jeans and wear them frequently. They quickly become one of our daily go-to staples. Starting our day in comfort and warmth often means wearing our jeans. A fall uniform. A typical fall/winter outfit usually consists of one of our favorite jeans matched-up with a knit top, or fuzzy sweater, or even a long tunic, fitted jacket or cardigan-plus a colorful scarf added for good measure. This cool weather "uniform" is good to have in our back pocket (so to speak) but the real key is to not let our outfits become boring. We need to mix up our style enough to keep our jean looks fresh.   Closet purging and decluttering can be a life long struggle. It was for me...until I started dressing with capsule wardrobes. Prior to making capsule wardrobes, I’d go through my clothes, rearrange my closet, remove a few things, and then add in even more. I felt the need to welcome each new season by going shopping. Do you see the vicious cycle I’ve got going on here? Last year, when I finally decided to clean out my closet for good, a lot of questions and suppressed emotions came up: Guilt: “Why did I spend so much money on things I ended up not wearing?”  Irritation: “Am I going to have to do all this work again in 6 months?” Panic: “If I let it go, will I have enough to wear?” Each question rolled arou[ More |  Email |  Print ]

Penny Pinching Panache It's no secret that the retail industry has been struggling to keep their profits up. Many stores are finding that their sales just aren't what they once were. As consumers, we are shopping LESS and because it this trend, the retail industry has had to make some serious adjustments. Lots of stores are keeping their inventories to a minimum so that they won't be left with too much merchandise at the end of each season. If you want more variety, you must purchase online. Also, if you don't shop early in the season, you will often find your size is no longer available. We are smarter consumers. The trend of buying only what we need and not much more means we are no longer willing to spend tons of cash on clothing that falls apart [ More |  Email |  Print ]

Some days we just need a hug and a positive affirmation that we are enough. Sure, we've got our "imperfections" and after all, they are part of what makes us uniquely who we are. We must therefore, relax and accept ourselves before we can move forward or make any changes, if that is what we desire. We must come to a place of contentment that we are enough. Accepting ourself first allows us to share enthusiastically with others our talents (whatever they may be). When our inner light shines through amazing things happen. As a fashion stylist, I have seen over the years that women are their most beautiful when they truly love and believe in themselves! [ More |  Email |  Print ]

Covering up my arms in hot weather...Yes or no?   Dear Leslie, On most days unless it's extremely hot outside, I prefer to cover my wobbly upper arms. I really do feel more comfortable when my upper arms are covered rather than exposed. I live in the south so most days are pretty warm but I try to keep them covered. Can you recommend a cute style of top that I won't overheat in and one that still allows my upper arms to be covered? I'm a body type C in case that helps. I have learned so much from your program and really love getting it every Thursday.  Thanks! Fondly, Maureen   MSP HERE: Dear Maureen,   Thanks for your style question.   As a woman with aging skin, the topic of skincare is near and dear to my heart. Since I'm over 50, I do my best to take care of my skin. I wash it with a gentle cleanser every morning and night, and I wear a moisturizer with sunscreen daily. But, am I really doing all I should do? Is there more to skincare? Taking care our skin is hugely important because better looking skin makes us look more youthful. Looking possibly years younger than our chronological age only happens when our skincare it kept up.   There it was! The message I needed to hear. Do you sometimes wonder how things come to you at just the right moment? I'm not sure how it happens, but I call it providence. I got this message (actually it's a sticker) that was left on the counter at my local gym. It was left there intentionally to share. Reading its message made me smile (and pause to think about it) since my day was rather hectic and stressed. I'm not sure exactly how this "intervention" happens, but I'm glad I got this message when I did. It helped me hit my "reset button" inside my head. Yes, reset your attitude, girl! That is what I told myself. All is good with the world, so stop and BREATHE and appreciate this present moment. Sometimes life gets off kilter or out-of-sorts.   Life can get complicated. After reading this article 11 Easy Ways to Uncomplicate Your Life I realized I often made my own life more difficult than neccessary. Do you find you do this too?   For example, I recently "volunteered" for something I didn't want to. Instead of saying "no" right away, I got talked into spending my time doing something my heart was not into. The reality is, when you don't feel passionate about something, you should pass right away-and not let others talk you into it. Let someone else volunteer. Sharing your time and talent with others only comes from the heart when you are truly passionate. There are plenty of things I'm passionate about; so this reminder to say "no" right away means I'll free my time to do the things I really love[ More |  Email |  Print ]
