MSP's Weekly Style Mission

This week’s Style Mission: Update your sunglasses. *STYLE TIP: July is a good month to buy quality sunglasses on sale!

Dog sat on and broke your sunglasses? Bummer. It's time to renew your look mid-season with a new pair of sunglasses. Block out those harmful rays with a new style pair of sunglasses.

No need to spend designer $ on name brands! According to the Mayo Clinic “choose sunglasses that block at least 99 percent of UVB rays and at least 95 percent of UVA rays”. Even “cheapo” brands offer UVB/UVA blockage you want. Read the labels for complete of eye protection information.

Nordstrom Quay Australia Mirrored Aviators-On Sale!

SUNGLASSES STYLE TIP: Pick the right sunglasses BY your face shape—NOT because they're the latest rage. Right now large ROUND sunglasses are popular. But, if you have small features you'll end up looking silly and like a bug (aka Mary Kate Olson).

Pick your best sunglass style based on your face shape:

Round. Try rectangular shapes to make your face appear longer and thinner.

Oval. Try various oval shapes that are as wide, or wider than your face.

Square. Try styles that have width at the tops and a curve at the bottom of the rim.

Long. Look for styles with strong horizontal lines to shorten your face.

Heart. Try sunglasses that are wider at the bottom and styles with round top and squared bottom (like aviators).

What SYSters are Saying

Dear Leslie,

I always thought I was a warm spring, but now that I'm over 50 I am not so sure. I think some of the colors I use to wear do not look as good anymore. It is possible to change color seasons?
Thanks for all you do!

Your SYS, Lois

MSP HERE: Dear Lois,

Yes, it’s possible to change color seasons. What happens is as we age, our skintone, hair and eyes soften. Especially after menopause when we lose estrogen and we become “less warm”.

Try a slighter cooler version of some of the colors you normally wear. You may want to have a new color analysis done. It is possible to change color seasons completely.

DEAR LESLIE,

You really got me thinking about what’s in my makeup and body lotion after reading this blot post you wrote some time ago about the chemicals in the products we use: http://missussmartypants.blogspot.com/2012/02/what-exactly-is-in-product-we-use.html

I wished you had have explained how we find out about the ingredients listed. Are they really harmful? I certainly want to know more. Do you know how we find out? I’ve heard about lead in lipstick and wonder if it’s really true.

Thank you for this website of yours. I have adjusted so much of my wardrobe because of your help. Reading my profile is one of my favorite pampering things I do for me.

With love, Salley M.

MSP HERE: DEAR SALLEY,

When I wrote that post I had just switched to a sulfate-free shampoo. I was always concerned about what I put IN my body, always trying to eat clean.  However, it was not until I read about chemicals in facial moisturizers that I truly became concerned about what I put ON my body as well.

Together we can demand changes in our food industry as well as the makeup/beauty industry by only purchasing products that are chemical-free. Europe seems to leading the way by not allowing as many harmful chemicals in makeup, etc. as we do in the U.S.

Check your medicine cabinets and makeup drawers in this data base to see if they are potentially harmful (makeup, lotions, child’s toothpaste, sunscreens, nail polish, shampoos, etc)  www.ewg.org/skindeep

This is a website database for looking up any cosmetic brand you might use. It lists the risk factors for each brand. Very helpful information because too much exposure to chemicals messes up your hormones!

DEAR MSP,

Thank you for helping me conquer the closet dilemma of too many clothes but nothing to wear. I did the closet purge and it was quite liberating as the majority of my clothing did not make me happy when I wore it.  Using my new personal profile, I took myself shopping and purchased 4 basic pieces for my wardrobe.  I was excited to even buy what I had always considered a no-no... white crop pants!

I am an E and quite large.  I have always heard that I should never wear white pants.  I am happy to report that last Monday when I wore my new white pants and new turquoise tunic top to work (we are a casual dress office mostly) I received so many compliments!  Yeah me!  I can wear white pants now and feel pretty.

Thank you so much.  Your fashion advice is priceless! Cathy

MSP HERE: DEAR CATHY,

You are doing such a good job on your style journey!! Go YOU!!!

It’s about trying my suggestions—I won’t lead you astray, I promise. Wearing the right styles does matter to all 5 body types.

Nice fitting basics that mix and match, makes you look like you have an extensive wardrobe-when what you are is really a smarter shopper!

Remember to use accessories to change the look around.

Keep up the good work, and congrats on seeing the pretty woman you are!

Love, Leslie MSP

Dear Leslie,

I'm so excited to have just recently found Missus Smarty Pants :)

I'm currently learning so much from MSP and it is such a big help.

After having two kids (ages 4 and 2) I've kind-of let myself go. One

day I looked in the mirror and wondered how I went from a fashionable

young lady to a frumpy woman in mom-jeans and a t-shirt.

I decided it was time to change, but since my body is so different now

than pre-pregnancy, I had no idea how to dress it.

It was so wonderful to learn that my type is a B and that I can still

look good even with 30lbs to lose. And it's so refreshing to be told

that I can look good at any size and to love myself at any size.

Love, Susan S.
